This GFFFN workshop, co-organised by the UNFF Secretariat and the UN-REDD Programme, brought together 11 countries from Latin America and the Caribbean to exchange experiences on developing national forest and REDD+ financing strategies. The main outcome of the workshop was a report highlighting the lessons learned and best practices in developing such strategies in the region and beyond.

This GFFFN workshop aimed to build the capacity of relevant government entities to design a national forest financing strategy and develop project proposals on sustainable forest management for multilateral financing mechanisms. It included modules on specific financing mechanisms, the theory of change, developing problem and objective trees, logical frameworks, multi-stakeholder engagement, and the components of a national forest financing strategy.

The UN Strategic Plan for Forests 2030 and the Quadrennial Programme of Work provide a new framework for the Forum’s work. Due to the enhanced role that regional and sub-regional entities will play in the International Arrangement on Forests, those partners’ contributions to the IAF merit a dedicated and comprehensive discussion. The main objective of the expert group meeting is to enhance contributions of the regional and sub-regional partners to the implementation of the UNSPF and the 4PoW. In this context, the expert meeting is expected to provide regional and sub-regional partners with an opportunity to discuss their input to UNFF sessions, including a possible dedicated questionnaire, and contributions to the substantive input of the Forum to the HLPF 2018.

UNFFS convened an expert meeting to discuss and facilitate elaboration of proposals or work plans on how major groups and other relevant stakeholders can contribute to the implementation of the United Nations Strategic Plan for Forests (UNSPF) 2017-2030 and the Forum’s Quadrennial Programme of Work (4POW) 2017-2020. In addition, the expert meeting elaborated inputs to the thirteenth session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF13) on the contributions of forests to SDGs under review by the 2018 High Level Political Forum (HLPF 2018).

At the last session of the Forum (UNFF12), the UNFFS proposed guidelines and format for reporting on progress towards the implementation of UNSPF, UNFI and VNCs. UNFF12 requested the Forum Secretariat to further revise the format on the basis of consultations with Members of the Forum, other intersessional activities, the views expressed during the UNFF12 and pilot testing of the current draft format. The meeting discussed experiences gained in pilot testing, preliminary findings and revised the format, where needed.
