The expert meeting is being convened to gather views on the contributions of the Global Forest Financing Facilitation Network to the implementation of the UN Strategic Plan for Forests 2017-2030 (UNSPF), in preparation for discussions on this topic at the thirteenth session of the UN Forum on Forests in May 2018.

Location: Gaberone, Botswana

The workshop is being held as part of the capacity development project on “Building Capacity to Access Financing for Implementation of the UN Forest Instrument and Sustainable Forest Management in Botswana”, which was developed and implemented by the UNFF Secretariat. The purpose of the project is to provide a national forest action plan (NFAP), national forest financing strategy and project proposal development support and capacity building to Botswana to enable the country to access funds from multilateral funding sources such as Green Climate Fund (GCF), Global Environment Facility (GEF) and Adaptation Fund and other existing international funds for implementing sustainable forest management. The workshop objective is to strengthen the capacities of national experts in the development and formulation of national forest financing strategies and projects and/or programs for mobilizing financing for sustainable forest management from all sources, including from multilateral financing mechanisms.

The UNFF Secretariat/DESA in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) organized a three-day workshop on reporting on progress made towards the achievement of the Global Forests Goals (GFGs) and targets of the UN Strategic Plan for Forests 2030 (UNSPF). The workshop provided an opportunity to review and clarify terms used in the Global Forest Goals and targets and develop explanatory notes for national reporting to the Forum.

The event entitled “Promoting synergies between the UN Strategic Plan for Forests 2030, the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals” was held on Tuesday 4 December 2018 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at the SDG Pavilion (Ground Floor – Pavilion E), Katowice International Congress Center, during the twenty-fourth session of the Conference of Parties to the UNFCCC in Katowice, Poland. The event showcased the important role of forest-based actions to combat climate change through coherent implementation of the 2030 Agenda, the Paris Agreement, and the UN Strategic Plan for Forests 2030. The event brought together high-level representatives and technical experts from Member States, international organizations and other stakeholders to highlight the role of the voluntary actions and initiatives in the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals, Paris Agreement, and the Global Forest Goals.
