The objectives of the initiative were: (a) to provide an overview of the international trends related to sustainable forest management since the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, including the discussions on policy tools and instruments for emerging issues such as reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries; and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries (REDD-plus) and biodiversity conservation; (b) to review the development and implementation to a range of policy tools and instruments introduced for the practice of sustainable forest management, and to share experiences and lessons learned; (c) to discuss the challenges and opportunities ahead, and to consider possible future actions in advancing sustainable forest management and thereby, contribute to the international deliberations thereon.

The objective of the workshops is to strengthen and support the capacity of UNFF national focal points in developing countries and countries with economies in transition in reporting to the United Nations Forum on Forests on progress made in the implementation of the Forest Instrument at UNFF10 in 2013, in the context of the overall theme of that session on “forests and economic development”, and to strengthen and support their capacity to conduct monitoring, assessment and reporting (MAR) required for the preparation of national reports.

The key objective of the conference as a United Nations Forum on Forests country-led initiative was to provide conclusions and recommendations on how to realize the potential of forests in building a green economy as a contribution to the preparatory process for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 2012 and the tenth session of the United Nations Forum on Forests in Istanbul, Turkey in April 2013.

Forests for People: the role of national forest programmes and the Non-legally Binding Instrument on All Types of Forests; A Country-Led Initiative by the People’s Republic of China in Support of the UN Forum on Forests

The first workshop on forest financing in Low Forest Cover Countries will be held in Tehran, Iran, from 12 to 17 November 2011. It is co-organised by the UNFF Secretariat, the UNCCD Secretariat, UNEP and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and is funded by the Global Environmental Facility. The objective of the workshop was to validate the findings of the preliminary studies, particularly to identify gaps, obstacles and opportunities in financing Sustainable Forest Management in Low Forest Cover Countries (LFCCs), and initiate a network of forest financing stakeholders in the LFCCs and at the international level.

The Nairobi Workshop to Strengthen National Reporting in Support of the Implementation of the UN Forest Instrument is the second of five capacity-building workshops undertaken jointly by the United Nations Forum on Forests Secretariat (UNFFS) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The objective of the workshop is to strengthen the capacity of UNFF and FAO/FRA (Forest Resource Assessment) focal points in East and Southern Africa in reporting to the Forum on progress made in the implementation of the forest instrument at UNFF 10 in 2013 and UNFF 11 in 2015.
